I have grown to love coconut oil. Known primarily for it’s cooking purposes, this high-heat tolerant oil wears many hats. Although there is much controversy over this oil, particularly with the fact that it does contain a high amount of saturated fat, I still continue to use coconut oil. Mainly, because its saturated fat doesn’t come from animals, but from a plant-source. But for those who are concerned with keeping all levels of saturated fats out of the body, here are a few ways to use coconut oil without it going to your hips.
1. Makeup Remover-Coconut oil is solid until it reaches 76 degrees fahrenheit, so it makes a perfect eye makeup remover. Just let some melt in your palm and soak up the oil with a cotton ball to easily wipe off mascara and stubborn eyeliner-even waterproof cosmetics don’t stand a chance!
2. Hair Mask- Coconut oil makes a great deep conditioner for your hair. Hair should be deep conditioned periodically, depending on hair type. For more dry hair types, deep condition once a week. Melt coconut oil in the microwave and apply to freshly washed hair. Let oil sit in hair for about 30 minutes. Rinse out with warm water for the softest hair you’ve ever had!
3. Lip Balm- You can put coconut oil straight from the jar on your lips to condition and hydrate. This is an especially good lip hydrator for those who are extra sensitive to dyes or fragrances in commercial lip products.
4. Bug Bites- Coconut oil also has antibacterial properties to heal bites, bumps, and cuts. It acts as a shield in preventing infection, plus it doesn’t burn like other medications containing harsh chemicals and alcohol.
5. Shoe Polish- There’s no reason to buy chemical-laden shoe polish when coconut oil does the same thing. Just rub a bit into your leather shoes with a soft cloth, working it in for a natural shine. You can get the same effect on real wood furniture, just add a bit of lemon juice to the oil using a soft cloth as well.
